School Closing & Emergency Information

In today’s climate, school administrators are under mounting pressure to increase attendance, improve community relations and ensure school safety.

To this end, the Plano School District utilizes the rapid communication service call AlertNow.  AlertNow delivers voice, e-mail and emergency messages at the rate of a thousand calls per minute, to keep parents and guardians informed on emergency and non-emergency messages from school administrators and employees.

In the event of an emergency or school closing, vital information is communicated accurately and immediately, notifying parents, guardians and staff within minutes.

The Plano School District also uses AlertNow for non-emergency calls to remind parents about important upcoming events, report card availability online, cancellation of sporting events, medical information and much more!

Messages are sent in English or Spanish, based upon parents/guardians answers on the student’s emergency form.  Calls and e-mails are sent to the contact numbers/e-mail as they are designated on the same form.

It is very important that parents take time to fill out the emergency form (heavy card stock form in the registration packet) so AlertNow calls and e-mail are sent to the correct people.

If there is inclement weather and schools will be closed, households will be notified via the AlertNow system. Decisions as to whether buses will be running and if school will be in session on a given day will be made before 6:00 a.m. when possible.

Also, decisions regarding "school closing" announcements or early dismissals will be given to the following radio and television stations:

  • WSPY (Plano) 107.1 FM
  • WERV (Aurora) 95.9 FM
  • WLBK (DeKalb) 1360 AM
  • WGN-AM (Chicago) 720 AM
  • TV Channels 2, 5, 7, 9 and Fox32

During inclement weather or an emergency, please do not call the schools or administration office during school hours. It is important that phone lines are kept open during these times. Please do not call the radio stations at any time. Parents may check the school answering machine before or after school hours for messages.

Decisions regarding early dismissals due to inclement weather will be transmitted via AlertNow and phoned in to radio stations as soon as the decision is made, allowing parents a minimum of one hour to make the necessary arrangements for the care of their children.

Students will not be released from school unless the principal/staff knows the child is going home to a safe and supervised environment.

Information from the townships and Kendall County Sheriff's office is used when making decisions related to closing schools. Decisions will be made based upon the safety of our students. Your understanding and cooperation regarding unpredictable weather and emergency situations will be greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call the Administration Office at 630/552-8978.
